  • Reviews of the Handbook of Parenting

    From Contemporary Psychology:

"...this handbook is a remarkable achievement, not the least of which was that of bringing together such a large and distinguished group of contributors from so many different fields and with such varied scientific backgrounds and orientations....This valuable work should be made more accessible to parents, students and researchers."

"The chapters in this Handbook are thoughtful, current, detailed, and thorough....an invaluable source for scholars interested in human development, family relationships, and child care; educators involved in the design, implementation, or evaluation of programs aimed at parents; practitioners who work directly with parents and children; and policymakers concerned with child and family development. Although the four-volume set is understandably expensive, the quality and comprehensiveness of the book make it well worth the investment for scholars who specialize in parenting and parent-child relationships. At the very least, individuals should insist that their institutional libraries order the entire set for their reference collections."

    From the Journal of Adolescence:

''It is especially admirable....that Marc Bornstein not only took on this daunting task, but successfully produced a handbook that is definitive--remarkable for its breadth of coverage, for the expertise of its contributors and the quality of chapters that they have written, and for the heuristic value that these volumes contain....a multidisciplinary treasure"

    Handbook of Parenting

CICC is proud to utilize this issue of Effective Parenting to introduce you to the five volume Handbook of Parenting, which is the most comprehensive resource of what is known scientifically about being a parent in today's challenging times.

Edited by Dr. Marc C. Bornstein of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and featuring chapters written by such luminaries as Drs. Diana Baumrind of the University of California at Berkeley, Gerald Patterson of the Oregon Social Learning Center, Joyce Epstein of Johns Hopkins University, Alice Honig of Syracuse University, and James Garbarino of Cornell University, the Handbook of Parenting is a resource that every agency that provides parenting services every individual practitioner and every training program should have.

These five volumes are concerned with:

  • Different types of parents - mothers, fathers, single, adolescent and adoptive parents
  • Basic characteristics of parenting - behaviors, knowledge, beliefs, and expectations about parenting
  • Forces that shape parenting - how employment, social class, culture, and environment contribute to parenthood
  • Problems faced by parents
  • Special circumstances of handicapped, unhappy marriage, or drug addiction
  • Practical concerns of parenting - how to talk to pediatricians, promote children's health, foster social adjustment and cognitive competence, interact with schools, and mediate with children's peers.

Each of the five volumes of this massive work is devoted to important facets of parenting. The extensive coverage that can be seen in each volume reflects both the complexity of parenting in today's world and the breadth of research findings that are now available to inform parents and professionals and to shape parenting interventions.
