  • Parents On Board: Building Academic Success Through Parent Involvement
    Parents On Board

The Parents On Board Program is for parents of 4 to 14 year old children, and it is based on the assumption that they want their children to succeed in school - but they aren't sure how they can help.

The program reinforces their motivation for their children's academic success by sharing some important facts from the research on children's academic achievement.

The research is very clear that children whose parents are involved in their education:

    • Get better grades
    • Do more homework
    • Have better attendance
    • Have a higher graduation rate
    • Demonstrate a more positive attitude

The program then goes on to teach parents a set of skills and attitudes on how best to be involved in their children's education. The three teaching sessions cover:

Session One: Preparing Your Child to Succeed

    • Learning Styles
    • Learning Habits
    • Social Skills
    • Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds
    • Structuring the School Smart Home
    • Start the Year Off Right
    • Maintain a Good Relationship All Year
    • Understanding Information from the School
    • If you Suspect a Learning Difference

    Session Two: Encouraging Positive Behavior
    • Encouragement
    • Discipline
    • Beliefs Build Success
    • How to "Teach" a Positive Belief

Session Three: Reinforcing Your Child's Academic Skills
    • Parent As Coach
    • Coaching Your Child in Reading
    • Coaching Your Child in Writing, Spelling, Math and Science

It's easy to lead a group using the video and group discussion format!
The Leader's Guide, included in the Program Kit, gives step-by-step instructions on when to show the video portions and how to lead the discussions. Parents follow along with the Parent's Handbook.

The Program Kit includes directions on how best to use a special 30-minute promotional presentation. Designed as a mini-seminar, "Helping Your Child Succeed in School: An Introduction to Parent Involvement" includes video snippets and is an excellent way to publicize the program to groups of parents (such as PTA meetings).

    Parenting for Education: Part Two

This edition of Effective Parenting is the second in a series that brings attention to one of the most important roles that parents can play in the lives and futures of their children, the role of facilitators and supporters of their children's educational development.

Ideally, the contours and content of their facilitation and support should change as their children progress through the phases of their growth, from infancy and the preschool years through adolescence. Just as children's capabilities change over time, so too should the type of support and assistance parents can provide.

These editions of the newsletter are based on what research has to say about what parents can do to be the best facilitators and supporters. They also place the spotlight on programs and resources that can be used in communities to educate and help parents in carrying out this role in this crucial facet of their children's development.

At the most basic level, the role involves facilitating a child's cognitive or intellectual development, i.e., the development of the underlying competencies, attitudes, skills and strategies that are needed in order to learn and master the content and subjects that are taught in schools.

The role also involves the in-home facilitation of the very specific attitudes and skills that are needed to achieve in all of the educational settings that children are exposed to, beginning with kindergarten.

How to facilitate their educational growth in the later years, where homework is so important, and how best position oneself regarding this home-based activity is also of great import. Equally as important in this day and age is how to utilize the educational superhighway, the Internet, to maximize a child's formal educational experiences, and to prepare children for entry and acceptance into the final and most challenging educational context, college.

This Parenting for Education issue of Effective Parenting places a spotlight on Parents On Board, an excellent program for involving parents in their children's education and in offering guidance on how they can be educational coaches for their children and youth. This issue also shows how both parents and children can make excellent use of the Internet to enhance education, and to prepare for and apply to college. The Gateway to Academic Success CD program also brings attention to Internet resources that teachers can use.

Do enjoy and make good use of these resources!
